03 / ENGINEERING

Ideas made
testable.

Engineering turns scientific ideas into solutions. Define a problem, work within constraints, and use evidence to improve a design.

DESIGN / TEST / IMPROVE

A conceptual truss. Real structures require detailed analysis, suitable materials and safety checks.

A better design starts
with a better test.

A model makes an idea tangible. A fair comparison makes its evidence useful.

01 / DEFINE

What should it do?

Set a clear goal and constraints. For a paper bridge: span the same gap using one sheet, then support a measured load.

02 / COMPARE

Change one thing

Try a flat sheet and a lengthwise-folded sheet. Keep the paper, span, load location and testing procedure consistent.

03 / ITERATE

Let evidence lead

Repeat the test. Record failures and unusual results. Change one design feature, explain why, then test again before claiming success.

SMALL INPUT / BIGGER EFFECT

A lever trades
force for distance.

A lever rotates around a pivot. For an ideal lever in balance, force multiplied by its perpendicular distance from the pivot matches on both sides.

A longer input arm can balance a load with less force. But the input point moves farther: the lever does not create energy. Friction and the bar’s own weight complicate a real device.

Background: OpenStax: simple machines. The model here assumes a horizontal, weightless bar and vertical forces.

TRY THE IDEAL MODEL

Balance a 100 N load

50 N input force

Load arm: 1 m. Calculation: 100 × 1 ÷ input arm length. This is an educational model, not a construction specification.
